Located in the beautiful town of Tervuren, near the university city of Leuven, BSB is a not for profit, inclusive fee-paying international school with 1,350 students from approximately 70 countries. Whilst British-based, it is uniquely adapted to the needs of our international and multicultural student body. Our Primary School offers a bespoke enquiry-based curriculum. Students in Year 10 & 11 study for (I)GCSE and BTEC courses. Purpose of the role

Undertake general lifeguarding duties.


The successful applicant will

  • Maintain a continuous attention on the safety of the swimmers

  • Ensure internal swimming pool procedures are being followed

  • Ensure pool hygiene and well-functioning of pool systems

  • Be aware of general pool conditions and report deviations from the norm to management

  • Conduct daily inspections of pool installations as required by VLAREM and BSB procedures:

    • inspections of pool water quality using basic analysis instruments

    • registration of results

    • control of pool chemicals stock

    • keeping the pool logbook up to date

  • Complete all associated paperwork related to the daily tasks

  • Correct risk assessment, respond appropriately to drowning signs to perform rescue duties or to lead evacuation as mandated in the emergency plan

  • Administer efficient and adequately first aid with high-level equipment, incl. AED

  • Look after this equipment and perform maintenance if required

  • Logistic tasks in and around the pool (e.g. handling pool furniture, lane ropes, equipment trolleys)

  • Participate in the specific inside pool cleaning duties

  • Maintain pool equipment storage areas in a clean and tidy condition

  • Assist in the preparation and operation of events and activities including the assembly and dismantling of equipment in the swimming pool in a timely and safe manner

  • Study pool and campus safety policies, procedures and emergency plan, know your role by heart and always be ready to respond fast and accurate in every incident and this as part of your lifeguard team, liaising with the school nurses and with the BSB intervention team

  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the technology and the safety systems used in BSB swimming pool due to our provided training and self-study
    Know the safety, first aid and CPR equipment thanks to our training, your expertise and the daily inspections. Be able to use it fast and accurately in the most difficult and unexpected moments

  • Conduct all safety and first aid drills as requested by BSB

  • Attend actively all safety and first aid training as requested by BSB

  • Swim at least 500 meters in the BSB pool every week, as part of keeping up swimming and lifeguards capabilities and as field inspection of pool installation and to spot hazards or potential hazards in the pool


  • Possess a valid lifeguard certificate compliant to VLAREM (min. “Hoger Redder” BLOSO accredited, incl. the yearly refresher course)

  • Have an extended CPR-, ALS- and ERC-certificate or willing to follow these training and recycling courses as organised and requested by BSB


  • Preferably 2 years in a similar role

  • These posts are open to newly qualified as well as to more experienced Lifeguards


  • Show a positive and professional attitude, with courtesy and tact

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the technology and the safety systems used in swimming pools

  • Show the highest respect and be a role model when working with children, parents and teachers

  • Check and report prohibited behaviour in a gentle way but be firm when necessary

  • Ability to respond calm and effectively in emergency situations

  • Able to accept constructive feedback and to maintain good public relations

  • Carry out easy going but highly efficient teamwork

  • Be fluent in job related spoken English.  Sound knowledge of one of more languages is recommended, either French or Flemish

Conditions of service

  • Full-time (37,5 hours per week), permanent position

    • Work in shifts alongside the other Lifeguard

    • The opening hours of the swimming pool in term time are from 06:30 to 19:30

  • Attractive salary (BSB Operational scale – Band 2 with a minimum of € 30.484 and a maximum of € 47.644 gross per year, based on relevant working experience (possibility to opt for a term time only contract as well)
